Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism over his being Spanish and playing Cuban American actor Desi Arnaz.

The 52-year-old Oscar winner stars in the movie Being The Ricardos opposite Nicole Kidman who plays sitcom
    icon Lucille Ball.

‘I’m an actor, and that’s what I do for a living: try to be
people that I’m not,’ Javier told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview.

Answering back: Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism
over his being Spanish and playing Cuban American actor Desi Arnaz; seen last week in LA

Javier also argued that the flak over nationality tends to be
aimed in particular at non-native English speakers like himself.

‘What do we do with Marlon Brando playing Vito Corleone?
What do we do with Margaret Thatcher played by Meryl Streep?
Daniel Day-Lewis playing Lincoln? Why does this conversation happen with people with
    accents?’ he said.

‘You have your accent. That’s where you belong. That’s
tricky. Where is that conversation with English-speaking people doing things like The Last Duel, where they were supposed
to be French people in the Middle Ages? That’s
fine. But me, with my Spanish accent, being Cuban?’

He added defiantly: ‘What I mean is, if we want to open the
can of worms, let’s open it for everyone. The role came to me, and
one thing that I know for sure is that I’m going to give everything that I have.’

Profession: ‘I’m an actor, and that’s what I do for a living:
try to be people that I’m not,’ Javier told The Hollywood Reporter; he is pictured as Desi

The husband of Penelope Cruz joked: ‘We should all start
not allowing anybody to play Hamlet unless they were born in Denmark.’

After his interview he emailed the publication and qualified his
earlier remarks: ‘I do recognize that there are many underrepresented voices and stories that need
to be told, and we should collectively do better to provide
access and opportunities for more American Latino stories and storytellers.’

As Javier was slated for playing a Latino despite not being one, Rachel Zegler has
received opprobrium for supposedly being the wrong type of Latina to play Maria
in West Side Story as she is of Colombian and Polish descent rather than Puerto Rican.

Javier and Nicole were both controversial choices for
their roles when they were cast as Lucy and
Desi, whose daughter Lucie Arnaz publicly defended Nicole.

Incoming: The 52-year-old Oscar winner stars in the
movie Being The Ricardos opposite Nicole Kidman who plays sitcom icon Lucille Ball

The blowback they received was so intense that they both apparently tried to extricate themselves from the film as a result.

Although the producer Todd Black was able to persuade their
agents to keep them in, Nicole and Javier still wanted the film postponed a year.

Nicole said that once their attempts to finagle a delay were unsuccessful ‘then it was like:
“Oh, no. Oh, no. We actually have to do this.”‘

Since both Nicole and Javier grew up abroad they
were unaware of how proprietary Americans felt about Lucy
and Desi and so were unprepared for the backlash.

There he is: The real Desi Arnaz, who had a turbulent marriage to Lucille that ended in divorce, is pictured
in 1954 during the run of I Love Lucy

Aaron himself has previously defended casting Javier in the midst of
controversy about his not being Latin American.

‘First of all, Amazon’s casting department
had a Latina casting consultant on board. I found out, for instance,
because there was an actor who I was considering who’s Brazilian, and I was told by
the casting consultant that Brazilians aren’t considered [Hispanic] because they speak Portuguese,’ he told the Hollywood Reporter.

‘So, Javier is Spanish and the casting consultant was fine with
it. But I don’t want to use the casting consultant as cover.
I want to tell you my opinion on this and I stand by
it, which is this: Spanish and Cuban aren’t actable, OK?
They’re not actable. By the way, neither are straight and gay,’ he added.

‘Because I know there’s a small movement underway that only gay actors should play gay characters.
Gay and straight aren’t actable. You could act being attracted to someone, but most nouns aren’t actable.’

Film history: Javier argued: ‘What do we do with Margaret
Thatcher played by Meryl Streep?’ asking: ‘Why
does this conversation happen with people with accents?’

Meanwhile as rumors of Nicole’s casting began to spread this January it set of a
swirl of online chatter about who would be better suited for the role.

Debra Messing, who had just starred in a homage to
I Love Lucy on the last season of Will And Grace, began aggressively pitching herself
    for the part on Twitter.

However Lucie posted a Facebook video urging fans to
‘stop arguing about who should play it – she doesn’t look like her, her nose isn’t the same, she isn’t as
    funny.’

She noted that the film is ‘the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo, and her husband Desi Arnaz, my dad,
    not Ricky Ricardo.’

New work: ‘Where is that conversation with English-speaking people doing
things like The Last Duel, where they were supposed to be French
people in the Middle Ages?’ Javier asked

Desi, who played Lucy’s bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo on their program, had a tumultuous marriage
    to her in real life.

She filed for divorce for the first time in 1944, reportedly over his philandering and drinking, but they got back together before splitting up permanently in 1960.

In the meantime they produced two children and the sitcom that etched them into TV legend,
    running from 1951 to 1957.

Throwback: Despite their divorce, in which she called their marriage ‘a nightmare,’ Lucy and Desi remained publicly amicable for the rest of his life; they are pictured while
    married

They also starred in movies together throughout their marriage, including
Forever, Darling and the Vincente Minnelli comedy The
    Long, Long Trailer.

Despite their divorce, in which she called their marriage
‘a nightmare,’ Lucy and Desi remained publicly amicable for the rest of his life.

Lucy married Borscht Belt comic Gary Morton in 1961 and stayed with
him until her death in 1989, while Desi married one
    Edith Hirsch in 1963.

Edith and Desi both died of cancer one year apart – she passed on in 1985 and her husband, who loved cigars
from his native Cuba, succumbed to lung cancer
    in 1986.

Aaron Sorkin’s new biopic is about a single
week spent making an episode of I Love Lucy during which Lucy and Desi’s marriage is
    shaken.

The turbulent week, reportedly running from the table read
to the taping in front of a studio audience, is said to include a professional landmine for the couple as well.

Given all the talk around Arm Holdings’ blockbuster
debut on the Nasdaq, you may be surprised to hear that London’s junior market is home to another, albeit significantly smaller, fabless chipmaker in Sondrel (Holdings)
    plc.

Sondrel is in the business of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC)
designs, which is geek speak for computers that are designed with just one job in mind.

Bitcoin miners, for instance, use an ASIC built to mine
bitcoin and nothing else. You get the point.

London’s junior market is home to another, albeit significantly smaller, fabless chipmaker in Sondrel (Holdings) plc.

Anyway, while Arm Holdings takes flight in New
York, adding 20 per cent on the first day of trading, Sondrel has had
    a bit of a shocker.

Shares were down another 15% this week as it continued to reel from project delays and scaled back
customer orders. Year to date, Sondrel is down a crushing 76
    per cent.

In its latest earnings call, the group conceded that full-year revenues will be ‘substantially below current market expectations’, with a corresponding impact
    on full-year losses.

This Wednesday, Joe Lopez agreed to step down as chief financial officer
with immediate effect, with non-board interim CFO Nick Stone taking the temporary mantle.

    A coincidence of timing perhaps?

As for the wider small-cap market, the AIM All-Share Index got off to a worrying start after losing nearly 1 per cent on Monday.

This was despite the blue-chip index starting the week on the front foot in anticipation of a packed week
    of macroeconomic news.

Thankfully, junior stocks swung in the right direction as UK unemployment met expectations, as did the European Central Bank’s 25 basis point interest rate
    decision.

US inflation figures were a little on the heavy side, though not enough
    to spook the markets.

The AIM All-Share ended up recovering those Monday
losses to close the week flat at 746.42, though this
was a marked underperformance against the FTSE 100, which gained over 3 per
    cent.

A large chunk of the value of shares in disposable vape distributor
Supreme were thrown in the bin following damning research into the environmental effects of cheap, single-use vaping kits.
Shares were down 16.6 per cent across the week.

Ocean Harvest Technology Group plc, one of AIM’s very
few debutants in 2023, took a light battering in the wake of its first interim earnings
report as a publicly listed company.

The group, which specialises in researching, developing and selling seaweed
products for use in the animal feed industry, reported a delay in onboarding new
customers in Europe due to surging feed ingredient prices, sending shares down 18
    per cent.

Shareholders made their thoughts clear on medical technology company Belluscura’s interim results,
with shares diving over 18 per cent this week.

Revenues and earnings figures objectively justified this response, with top-line sales falling a third year on year to $400,000 (£321,000) and adjusted EBITDA falling 30 per cent to $2.9 million.

It’s never a weekly roundup without discussing the latest delisting
news. This week it is brought to you by Sportech.

You may be aware of Sportech through its pool-betting site
    123Bet, or
perhaps Connecticut, US readers have visited
one of its nine licensed gaming entertainment venues in the state.

Monday’s solid set of results – which showcased a threefold increase in underlying earnings – weren’t enough to dissuade the group from ploughing
ahead with its plan to delist from London’s junior AIM market.

    ‘Despite delivering improving operational results
announced today, the substantial financial cost associated with maintaining a public listing, given our current scale, and the increasing volatility in the market valuation is adversely impacting net
returns and future prospects,’ said executive chairman Richard
    McGuire.

Hardly an uncommon sentiment in the 2023 capital markets.

The heavy industries proved AIM’s saviour this week, thanks to a revival in sentiment
for China-exposed industries and surging commodity prices.

Exploration and development minnow Critical Mineral Resources (formerly Caerus Mineral
Resources) had a bumper week, leaping close to
50 per cent after confirming the completion of its Cyprus asset sale.

Other top industrial movers saw Synergia Energy, Pantheon Resources and Cadence Minerals
plc all up over 20 per cent, with Atome Energy and Coro Energy
    surging in the high teens.

LoopUp Group led the charge in the communications sector after smashing revenue and margin targets in its interim earnings.
Shares were seen around 40 per cent higher week on week.

Lastly, Keystone Law plc turned heads on Thursday after it confirmed full-year results
will be ‘comfortably ahead of market expectations’. Shares closed the week a
little over 10 per cent higher as a result.

There are many reasons to visit New York, but here’s one of the most irresistible – a bar called Dante.

This Greenwich Village Italian-style aperitivo bar has just claimed the Perrier-sponsored World’s Best
Bar Award, jumping eight places from 2018, MailOnline Travel can exclusively reveal.

The gong was handed out at London’s Roundhouse tonight as part of
The World’s 50 Best Bars 2019 awards, which was dominated by the UK, with 10 bars in the prestigious
ranking, and the USA, with seven – six in New York and one in San Francisco.

Dante, pictured, has just claimed the Perrier-sponsored World’s

An OnlyFans model has been slammed for posting a satirical
video during the devastating Hurricane Helene.

Set in Tampa, Florida, where millions braced for the superstorm’s impact, Skyler Simpson aired her own take on the event igniting a social media firestorm.

The video, posted on Instagram, shows her in a scandalous
hot pink bikini mimicking a newscaster while she holds a microphone and a ruined umbrella.

One user commented: ‘Incredibly poor taste with this.
People have died. Or are seriously injured.

‘Would you want to be in their shoes?’ Another added: ‘Disgusting, selling content while others are
    suffering.’

In a display of poor taste OnlyFans model Skyler Simpson has come under fire after posting a satirical video during the devastating Hurricane Helene

The September 28 video shows the black and white patterned
umbrella distorting itself as it catches the hurricane-speed winds while the model
falters in knee-deep water while she delivers a fake newscast.

As her ‘news report’ continues Simpson stands on Bayshore Boulevard while her ‘cameramen’ pelt her with various objects including ice
cubes and a banana peel, adding to the foolish nature of the clip.

As she finds her balance through the crashing waves along the flooded
roadway, the model said: ‘As you can see I think people got a little bit dramatic with
how the weather was going to be here.’

‘I think it is a beautiful night here out on Bayshore, perfect for strolling with your family and having a nice
nighttime walk,’ she added before nearly falling into the water.

Simpson fired back in the comments continually emphasizing the satirical nature of the content urging those angered by her
video to ‘feel free to unfollow.’

After roaring ashore in Florida, the weakened Hurricane Helene quickly moved
through Georgia, then soaked the Carolinas and Tennessee with torrential rains that flooded creeks and rivers.

States across the Southeastern U.S. have since started a massive cleanup and recovery effort on Sunday after winds, rain and storm surges knocked out power for millions, destroying roads and bridges in its path.

The devastation stretched along a string of
east coast states as the storm killed at least 130 people in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia,
North Carolina and Virginia with officials fearing even more bodies will be discovered.

    By Lewis Krauskopf

NEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) – Shares of U.S. healthcare companies are gaining
favor as investors bank on their ability to weather rocky economic times and the stocks look more reasonably valued
    than other defensive sectors.

Healthcare has been the top-performing S&P 500 sector over the past month,
rising nearly 3% while the broader market has
fallen modestly. The group has fallen 8.7% so far this year, less
severe than the nearly 20% drop for the benchmark S&P 500 overall.

Strategists at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and BofA Global Research are among those
favoring the healthcare sector, given that the companies’ businesses are expected to hold up better than others should the economy face a downturn.

“We feel like it is one of the last opportunities to play defense at a reasonable price,” said Walter Todd,
chief investment officer at Greenwood Capital in South Carolina.

Greenwood is overweight healthcare stocks in its large-cap portfolios including shares
of Johnson & Johnson, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Pfizer Inc.

How healthcare companies are performing will become more clear in the coming days as second-quarter reports roll in, starting on Friday with UnitedHealth Group Inc, the largest U.S.
    healthcare company by market value.

Earnings in the healthcare sector – which includes large drugmakers, medical equipment companies, health insurers and biotech firms – have outperformed in recent recessionary periods.
That makes them an attractive target for investors looking for assets that can weather
a potential downturn, as recession worries grow amid aggressive monetary policy tightening from
    the Federal Reserve.

For example, while overall S&P 500 earnings fell for nine straight quarters during the
Great Recession in 2007-2009, the healthcare sector posted earnings growth in those periods, according
    to Refinitiv IBES data.

Over the last 25 years, earnings per share for the sector have increased nearly 10% annually
compared with 6.6% annual growth for the S&P 500, while producing “much more consistent annual growth relative to the broader market,” according to Eric Potoker, U.S.
healthcare equity strategist in the CIO office of UBS Global
    Wealth Management.

“If they have healthcare needs, that is usually one of the last places that people will ration,” Potoker said.

Healthcare also remains relatively more attractive than other so-called
defensive stocks based on standard valuation metrics.

Healthcare is trading at 15.7 times forward earnings estimates against
its long-term price-to-earnings average of 17.5 times, according
to Refinitiv Datastream. That represents a 10% discount.

Meanwhile, other defensive sectors are trading at premiums relative to
their historical valuations – with utilities at a premium of over 30% and consumer staples at a 12% premium.

Unlike healthcare stocks, utilities and staples, at 19.4 times
and 20.1 times, respectively, are also trading above
the 16.1 times P/E ratio of the overall S&P 500.

“We find other traditionally defensive sectors, including utilities and staples, to be expensive relative to the broader market,” Tony
DeSpirito, chief investment officer of U.S. fundamental equities at
BlackRock, said in his third-quarter equity outlook in which he described “an underappreciated opportunity in healthcare stocks.”

To be sure, should investors become more upbeat about the economy, that could lead them to leave behind
healthcare shares for more cyclically sensitive
stocks such as financials or industrials.

Healthcare also for years has faced persistent investor concerns about regulatory changes, particularly related to
potential U.S. action to rein in prescription drug prices, which has
created a cloud over the stocks.

In the coming months, Democrats in U.S. Congress could try to pass a drug-pricing bill,
and “biopharma stocks could be volatile if legislation progresses,” analysts at SVB Securities said in a note.

The under-fire Rugby Football Union are refusing to justify their controversial financial actions, despite widespread outrage within the English
game about the bonuses revealed in the union’s annual report.

While the RFU incurred an operating loss of nearly £40million, chief executive Bill Sweeney was rewarded with a ‘long-term incentive plan’ bonus of £358,
000, to take his overall earnings for the year to a staggering £1.1m.

Five other executives at Twickenham were awarded a combined bonus sum
of close to £1m, soon after 42 union staff were made redundant.

Mail Sport columnist Sir Clive Woodward expressed his shock at the enhanced pay received by Sweeney and Co, following a period of turmoil in the
sport in this country – and at a time when the men’s national team
have lost seven of 12 Tests in the calendar year.

‘I am sure I am not the only one who thinks it is an insult to the
wider English rugby public,’ he said.

Now, the former England head coach is infuriated by the refusal of Sweeney and
the rest of the secretive RFU hierarchy to face the music.

‘This is a time when champions really front up, if they have done nothing wrong,
‘ he said. ‘They should never hide.’

Yet, hiding is the preferred policy, it seems. The RFU have
received and so far rebuffed requests to stage a Press conference and answer for their financial
conduct and what is being viewed as shameless greed in an era of budget cuts and hardship in English rugby.
The union have scaled back access to their executives in recent years and current chairman Tom Ilube has been an elusive, low-profile figure.

There has been a reluctance to accept responsibility and accountability, despite MPs accusing Sweeney two years ago of being ‘asleep
at the wheel’ and operating ‘in some ivory
tower’ after the collapse of Wasps and Worcester
    – before London Irish also went out of business. Woodward is adamant that there must accountability now.

The Rugby Football Union has so far refused to face questions
about their £37.9million operating loss and Bill
    Sweeney’s £1.1m salary

Chief executive Sweeney was rewarded with a ‘long-term incentive plan’ bonus of £358,000

Sir Clive Woodward questioned in his Mail Sport column what targets had been hit as
the national team continues to flounder

He added: ‘I have always believed in a saying about the window and the mirror.
When things are going really well, look through the
window and always credit other people, not yourself. When things are going wrong,
look in the mirror, take responsibility and front up.

‘These guys have to look in the mirror, take
responsibility and front up to the Press. Warren Gatland did it after losing big games in the last month.
He came in, on his own, faced all the questions and
fronted up, which you have to do.

‘You have to take responsibility, say “It’s my fault” and
talk, for as long as you have to. Then the story will go away.
You can’t hide. The rugby public want to hear about this.
They want to know what the governing body have to say about this.’

England’s Autumn Nations Series campaign yielded
just one win, over Japan, in four Tests, but the latest official review of
the national team – by an anonymous panel – won’t take place until the New Year.
Until then, the RFU will not publicly discuss the myriad concerns of England supporters about the latest sequence of disappointing
    results.

Welcome to Ice City: Russia plans to build frozen community 1,000 miles from North Pole…
as race for Arctic minerals heats up

Russia is to build an ultra-modern city on a frozen island deep inside the Arctic Circle
    – in the Kremlin’s latest move to back its claim to vast oil and
gas reserves under the polar ice cap.

Named Umka, after a popular Soviet polar bear cub cartoon hero, the initial 5,000 residents will live
under a vast dome to protect themselves from temperatures
sinking below minus 30C in winter.

‘This city will be of strategic importance as Russia’s northern outpost,’ said
architect Valery Rzhevskiy who has shown its modernistic designs to an approving Vladimir Putin.

Extraordinary: The city will cost up to £4 billion and be built on the
remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk
archipelago, some 1,000 miles from the North Pole

Vast: The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station but in comparison is much larger –
one mile long and 800 yards wide

Sources say it is likely to house soldiers, border guards and secret service officers, as well as scientists and explorers,
as Moscow gets serious about claiming Arctic mineral riches.

All will enjoy a luxury lifestyle in the cocoon with its own specially
regulated temperate climate – including many facilities to make inhabitants of other cities envious.

‘We aim to have scientific laboratories, houses, but also parks with attractions, an Aqua complex,
hotels and a cathedral. Naturally there will be schools, kindergartens, recreation zones, a hospital,
and sport facilities are planned, too,’ said Rzhevskiy.

‘We want people who will be living and working here not to realise they are in some closed space with an aggressive Arctic climate outside.’

The extraordinary venture – nicknamed ‘wonder city’ – will be built at a cost of up to £4 billion on the remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago ,
some 1,000 miles from the North Pole, closer than any other Russian city.

Strong winds make it one of the most inhospitable places
on the planet, and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point.

Bleak: Strong winds make the area one of the most inhospitable
places on the planet, and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing
    point

The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station,
but it is vast by comparison – just short of one mile long and 800
    yards wide.

‘So far it’s the only project in the world
with an artificial climate and integral life support – just like on the space station. Not only is it a new word in architecture, but
in human living too. We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.’

‘So far it’s the only project in the world with an artificial climate and
integral life support – just like on the space station.
Not only is it a new word in architecture, but in human living too.
We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.’

    – Valery Rzhevskiy, architect

Electricity will be supplied by a floating nuclear power station. Food
wise, it will be totally self-sufficient with fish and
poultry farms, greenhouses, a wheat processing factory and bakeries.

‘There will not be any rubbish at all, as the city will have two
factories converting all kinds into ashes.’

It will house workers for local mines and oil platforms which
should pay the costs of the development, it is claimed.

‘This project is designed to work on any surface,
even on the Moon if needed,’ said Rzhevskiy, one of Russia’s top
    architects.

The ice city plans – currently with no fixed timetable for opening – comes as all countries with territory
touching Arctic waters are gearing up to make
competing demands to the United Nations over underwater mineral exploitation rights.

Western countries were stung when in 2007 Russian polar explorer Artur Chilingarov placed his country’s flag
in the Arctic seabed in 2007.

‘We must prove the north pole is an extension of the Russian land
mass,’ he said at the time.

A Canadian think tank this year even warned that ‘an arms race
maybe beginning’, expressing concerns at the risk
    of conflict.

The U.S., Canada, Norway and Russia have all boosted their naval presence
in Arctic waters amid warnings of a Cold War that
could literally be cold – except perhaps at Umka.

It is the stuff of nightmares: a lake is stained
red with blood of slaughtered pigs which is attracting hundreds of man-eating
crocodiles who prowl a nearby neighbourhood and family kill dogs.

Those who live along the shore next to the lagoon can do little but watch
as the crocodiles snatch their treasured livestock and pets – and pray their children won’t be next.

The Lake of Blood, as the locals call it, has attracted 300 deadly
crocodiles since a nearby slaughterhouse began dumping pigs’ blood and offal into the water.

Polluted: Nicknamed ‘The Lake of Blood’ this lagoon is turned red by pigs’
blood and offal from pigs killed at a nearby slaughterhouse.
It has attracted 300 man-eating crocodiles to the lake

Useful: The lake is also attracting poachers to the area who kill the crocodiles and sell them to exotic animal traffickers for £7 a centimetre – £500 per crocodile

Nursery: The lake has become a magnet for five-metre long crocodiles who prowl the nearby neighbourhood and eat
    livestock and pets

Terror: Lauren Villaney’s pet dog Pepper was killed last year.
‘There was nothing I could do, I just had
to watch in horror through a hole in my wall,’ she told MailOnline

It is here in Chetumal, 200 miles south of Cancun on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, the reptiles raise their
young, which swim in the murky waters as the older, larger predators bathe
    in the Central American sunshine.

It is at night that the residents fear the crocodiles the most.
That’s when they pick off their chickens and, worse, pet dogs.

And there is nothing anyone can do, should a crocodile come
within striking distance of a dog.

Dani Hernandez lives in constant fear for her children’s lives; malaria-ridden mosquitos
swarm her slum shack night and day, which sits not 50 yards
    from the blood-filled lake.

‘I’m kept awake at night by the biggest males roaring and fighting just metres from my door,’ Ms
Hernandez, mother to Gael, four, and Brian, seven months, told MailOnline.

‘It’s terrifying, because there’s no way my tiny shack could stand up to a five metre monster if it wanted to come in.’

Frightened: Dani Hernandez lives in fear of her children being caught by one of the crocodiles.
‘There’s no way my tiny shack could stand up to a five
metre monster if it wanted to come in,’ she told MailOnline

Stuck: The families who live near the lake, and the slaughterhouse, pictured, which is 500 metres
from the border with Belize, have no choice but stay there as they are too impoverished to move

Nightmares: The crocodiles, which can be seen swimming in the festering water, hunt at night.
This also attrats hunters who come to kill the crocodiles

Insects: The water has also attracted thousands of disease carrying mosquitoes
    to the area

Lauren Villaney’s pet dog Pepper was killed last year.

‘There was nothing I could do, I just had to watch in horror through
a hole in my wall,’ she told MailOnline.

‘Since that happened I’ve built a large fence around the shack, but
that doesn’t stop them from prowling around the yard at all
    hours.’

But another resident, fed up losing his loyal companions to the
crocodile’s jaws, has taken a more proactive approach.

The man, who declined to be named, said: ‘The last
time they ate my dog I took a shotgun down to the lakeside and
blasted the larger adults while they sat basking in the sun in the reeds.

‘You have to shoot a crocodile directly in the brain first time –
    otherwise they simply don’t die.

‘Even if you get a good shot in you can expect to
be chased by the others. But eventually the others reptiles smell
blood and cannibalise the dead crocodile.’

But they are far from the only danger the community faces.

Fear: Residents are frightened the crocodiles could eat their children next.
Lauren added: ‘I’ve built a large fence around
the shack, but that doesn’t stop them from prowling around the yard at all hours.’

Business: As well as fears over the animals killing their pets and livestock, residents have to put up with hunters
    coming to the area

Profit: It is a lucrative business as hunters catch the dangerous crocodiles, which are worth hundreds of pounds on the black market, prized for the leather their skin creates

Trapped: Lauren says people ask why she lives so close to the crocodiles, but
she says: ‘We simply do what we can when there’s no other option. A human being can get used to
    living alongside anything’

In addition to the crocodiles, Lauren says that boa constrictor snakes, which are
native to the Western Caribbean, often hunt both her and her
    animals.

‘The snakes are the most terrifying because they are enormous and
have no fear,’ she told MailOnline.

MAYAN LEGEND: HOW THE CROCODILE LOST ITS TONGUE

One of the oldest of the Mayan deities, the Crocodile
god Sobek once had a tongue with which it spoke to the other animals and offered them
    counsel.

One day Xolotl the Dog, the Mayan god of death and trickery, came to the crocodile and complained of its terrible
    thirst.

‘Dear crocodile’, said the dog, ‘I cannot drink water for
I have no tongue in my mouth, and I will surely die of thirst if you
    do not help me.

‘Please lend me yours for a short while that I may satisfying my thirst’.

The crocodile agreed, on the condition that the
following day the two would meet in the midday shade of
sacred Ceiba tree to return the crocodile’s tongue.

The dog departed with a tongue in its mouth and overjoyed at the ability to drink freely from any lake or river, never arrived the next day to return it.

Robbed of its tongue and left without speech, the crocodile was banished to the hellish swamps between the sea and the land, and to this day will
attack any dog that comes close as revenge for the trick played upon it.

‘If a crocodile sees a human it will generally move
away, but a boa constrictor will just keep silently moving towards you.’

Meanwhile, swarms of mosquitoes envelop any thin-skinned creature within a 500-metre radius of the lake’s edge in a cloud of angry black specks,
inflicting bites which last for weeks – threatening the local residents at
every moment with dengue fever, malaria and zika virus.

‘My baby Brian has been made very sick by the constant mosquitoes,’ says Dani,
pointing out the myriad insect bites across the little boy’s face and
    arms.

‘Malaria is a terrible disease, and sooner or later we all get it living here.’

‘A lot of my friends ask me why I don’t move away, but it’s not that simple,’ Lauren admitted,
holding one of her hens under her arm beside the rancid lake.

‘This is a slum, we simply arrive and build
our houses without official permission. The
only reason we have been left alone by the government is because no one else wants the land.

‘We simply do what we can when there’s no other option. A human being can get used to living
    alongside anything.’

And there are other people who can see the profit in what
the Lake of Blood has to offer.

The crocodiles’ leather is worth £7 a centimetre once properly cured
    – £500 per crocodile.

One Chetumal-based animal trafficker, El Cuerno, told MailOnline that the start
of the mating season in February is the best time to poach live crocodiles from the lake.

Infection: Dani’s baby Brian, pictured with his four-year-old
brother Gael, is covered in bites from mosquitoes.
‘Sooner or later everyone gets malaria,’ Dani said

Danger: ‘A lot of my friends ask me why I don’t move away, but it’s not that simple,
‘ Lauren admitted, holding one of her hens under her arm beside
    the rancid lake.

Uninhabitable: ‘The only reason we have been left alone by the government is because no one else wants the land,’ she acknowledged.
Pictured: A raided crocodile egg nest

‘The start of the mating season is when the male crocodiles are
at their fattest and most powerful,’ he told MailOnline.
‘The ideal animal is around five years old and beginning
    to fight for territory.

‘A skin is worth less if it’s covered in scars and battle wounds so it’s important to get the
animal when it is reaching adulthood, but before it has started battling for dominance.’

The municipal slaughterhouse staff declined to comment on the environmental damage caused by their improper disposal of biological waste when approached by MailOnline.

The flawless West Coast Fever have continued their undefeated start to the Super Netball season, triumphing over the Adelaide Thunderbirds 57-56 in a nailbiter in Perth.

The Fever notched six of the first seven goals of the fourth quarter to snatch the game from the third-placed Thunderbirds on Saturday night.

But a late Thunderbirds fightback, with supershots from Georgie
Horjus and Lucy Austin, set up a blockbuster finish.

The Fever held on by a solitary point to become the last remaining undefeated team after
the Sunshine Coast Lightning beat the Melbourne Vixens earlier
    in round six.

Fever goalshooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard was immaculate, scoring 49 goals from 49 attempts plus a supershot, while fellow Jamaican teammate Kadie-Ann
Dehaney ruled the defence, frustrating compatriots Romelda Aiken-George and Shamera
    Sterling-Humphrey.

“The Jamaicans are very competitive so we expected a really good game, but not to come away with a one-goal win,” Dehaney said after the match.

“But we’re grateful for the win.”

Despite conceding 10 intercepts, West Coast’s
    shooting gave them the edge.

The Fever started the game stronger, running out to a 14-12 lead after
    the first quarter.

But the Thunderbirds dominated the second, scoring
16 points to 12 to take a lead into the main break.

“We were below standard, especially at the start with our work rate,” Dehaney
    said.

“We decided at halftime this is the line, when we get back out here we need to apply pressure, lift the standard of our work rate.”

Horjus was a stand-out for the Thunderbirds, amassing 20 goal assists on top of her
three supershots to keep her team in the contest.

The result sets up league-leading Fever for a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash with
    the Vixens next weekend.

“Coming up against the Vixens is going to definitely be a hard game as well,” Dehaney said.

“They are a world-class team, they are very good, so it’s going to be a good encounter as well.”
